Fuel Tank
The fuel tank contains the gasoline supply and a sending unit that signals the fuel gauge about the amount of gasoline remaining in the tank. Most fuel-injected vehicle tanks contain a filler pipe and a fuel pump. Also, a fine-mesh «sock» is attached to a pick-up tube in most tanks. It serves to filter out large particles that can easily clog the fuel lines, filter, and fuel pump.
Fuel Line

Fuel Pump

In-line and spin-on filters are located between the fuel pump and metering components. These fuel filters can also be located at the carburetor or throttle body inlet. On throttle body units, the filters are used to supplement the in-line primary filter.
Fuel/Water Separator
These can be found on diesel trucks and automobiles. It may be part of the fuel filter housing or a separate remote unit. The vast majority function as a two-stage filter. The first at the bottom remove dirt particles down to 1 micron and allows water to form large droplets. Fuel passes freely through the filter in the second stage, but water cannot. This causes water to accumulate at the bottom of the filter housing and may have a drain plug at the bottom.
These separate units are usually mounted next to the fuel tank. Some may illuminate a warning light on the fuel tank when it requires draining.
